A Feast For The Eyes

Just like the rest of the body, our eyes need nourishment from the nutrients in various foods. Eating well supports good health in many ways, so you'll score double points in one easy strike!
Our Optometrist has given below their top nutrients for healthy eyes:

Vitamin A: Eggs and cheese are good sources of this nutrient which can help to maintain vision and support the normal function of the immune system too.

Omega 3: The Omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA contributes to normal vision but also has a structural role throughout the body.

Zinc: Foods like bread and meat are a good source of this mineral which helps maintain vision. Zinc also helps support normal cognitive function, that's mental processes like memory and learning to you and me.

Carotenoids: When you are watching television or reading, you are using your central vision, which comes from the back of the eye in a region called the macula.

The macula has a yellow colour, or pigment, which comes in part from nutrients called carotenoids. These are found in many brightly coloured foods like mangoes, yellow peppers, leafy greens and corn.

Lack of nutrients can leave the macula much more susceptible to damage and therefore at greater risk of gradual loss of central vision in a condition called Age Related Macular Degeneration.

Remember the endless discoveries the world held when you were a child? Beyond eyes being a window to a world of new experiences, 80% of what children learn is through sight.So it is well worth caring for their eyes.Some key things to bear in mind include:

  • Getting your children's eyes checked while they are still developing makes it easier to nip any problems in the bud. Children usually have their eyes checked by a health visitor when they are a year old, and it's advisable to check them again at four or five years old. Children under the age of 16 can get a free NHS-funded eye check every year.
  • For all those hours spent outdoors, remember to keep them protected in their own pair of sunnies too.
  • Just like adults, nutritious meals help children maintain their normal vision.

Much as we may love the convenience that comes with the digital age, hours spent focusing on screens means we blink less, which may leave eyes feeling dry, gritty, and uncomfortable. They might even look a little red. Here's a few options to consider:

  • Using the appropriate eye drops means that you can instantly soothe irritated and red eyes.
  • A spray can be a great alternative to drops if you want something to use while on the go, or perhaps in the office.
  • A soothing gel might just give you a little extra relief before you go to bed. Try using a gel once you've finished your cleansing routine.
